How to compare two folders
Select the original folder and changed folder, then choose Compare Folders. WCODX matches files by their relative paths and checks their bytes locally in your browser.
What Folder Compare checks
The result identifies identical files, modified files, files that exist only in the original folder, files that exist only in the changed folder, and binary files whose bytes differ.
Comparing folder structures
Nested directories are preserved in the result tree. A file such as assets/css/style.css is matched by its complete relative path, not only by its filename.
Finding modified and missing files
Use the status filter and search box to narrow a large result. Identical files are hidden by default, while the summary always includes complete comparison totals.
Comparing code projects
Folder Compare is useful for reviewing source code, configuration, documentation and assets across two versions of a project before release or migration.
Privacy and local browser processing
Folder selection, hashing and text diff rendering happen locally. WCODX does not upload your folders, store their contents or send filenames to analytics.
Folder Compare vs Text Compare
Text Compare examines two individual text inputs. Folder Compare examines two directory structures first, then lets you open a detailed text diff for modified text files.
Folder Compare FAQ
Can I compare two folders online?
Yes. Select an original folder and a changed folder. WCODX compares their relative paths and file bytes locally in your browser.
Are my folders uploaded to WCODX?
No. Folder Compare uses browser file-selection APIs and processes names, metadata and contents locally. Your files are not uploaded.
Can Folder Compare check subfolders?
Yes. Supported directory selection recursively includes nested files, and each file is matched by its complete relative path.
Can I compare two code projects?
Yes. Folder Compare is useful for reviewing source code, assets, configuration files and documentation across two project folders.
How are modified files detected?
Files with matching relative paths are compared using SHA-256 byte digests rather than relying only on size or modified time.
Can I compare the contents of changed files?
Modified text files can be opened in an integrated line diff viewer with line numbers, context hiding and navigation.
Can WCODX compare binary files?
Yes. Binary files are compared safely as bytes and reported as identical or binary different; binary data is never rendered as text.
Can I hide identical files?
Yes. Hide unchanged files is enabled by default and can be turned off to show the complete result tree.
Does Folder Compare modify my files?
No. The tool is read-only. It does not edit, delete, rename, synchronize or upload local files.
