- Review detailed statistics.
- Check reading time and keyword frequency.
Word count vs character count
Word count measures detected words, while character count includes all user-perceived characters, including whitespace. Characters without spaces excludes whitespace but does not remove punctuation.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is estimated from word count divided by the selected reading speed. The default is 225 words per minute. Actual reading speed varies with the reader, language, text complexity and purpose.
How is speaking time calculated?
Speaking time uses the selected words-per-minute rate, defaulting to 130 WPM. It can help plan presentations, speeches, video scripts, podcasts and voiceovers, although delivery speed varies.
What is keyword density?
Keyword density describes keyword occurrences relative to the total analyzed words. It is a simple descriptive measure; higher density does not automatically improve SEO, and keyword stuffing can make content worse for readers.
Common word-count considerations
| Content type | Typical consideration |
|---|---|
| Meta description | Keep copy concise; search engines do not guarantee display from a fixed character count. |
| Social post | Limits depend on the platform. |
| Essay | Follow the assignment requirements. |
| Blog post | Length depends on topic and user intent. |
| Speech | Use speaking time rather than an arbitrary word target. |

Word Counter FAQ
How do I count words online?
Type or paste text into the editor. WCODX updates the word, character, sentence, paragraph and line counts while you work.
Does the Word Counter count characters with spaces?
Yes. Characters includes whitespace. Characters without spaces excludes whitespace but keeps punctuation and other visible characters.
What is the difference between characters and characters without spaces?
Characters counts every user-perceived character, including spaces, tabs and line breaks. Characters without spaces removes whitespace from that metric only.
How is reading time calculated?
Estimated reading time is based on total words divided by the selected reading speed. The default is 225 words per minute, and actual speed varies by reader, language and text complexity.
How is speaking time calculated?
Estimated speaking time divides total words by the selected speaking speed. The default is 130 words per minute, which is useful for speeches, presentations and scripts.
What is keyword density?
Keyword density is the number of occurrences of a word or phrase relative to the total analyzed words. It is an estimate and is not a recommendation to stuff keywords.
Does keyword density improve SEO?
No. Higher keyword density does not automatically improve SEO. Write useful, natural content for readers and use keywords only where they fit.
Can I count words in a text file?
Yes. TXT, Markdown, CSV and LOG files up to 5 MB can be read locally in your browser without uploading them to WCODX.
Does WCODX save the text I enter?
No. The text and analysis remain in the current browser page. WCODX does not upload or store your text.
Does the tool support Unicode text?
Yes. The tool uses browser Unicode segmentation where available. Results can vary slightly by language because word boundaries are language-dependent.
How are paragraphs counted?
A paragraph is a non-empty block separated from another block by one or more blank lines. Repeated empty lines are not counted as paragraphs.
